This book is simply magnificent. I am an attorney in my 60s but I’ve never read Ulysses. My mother us an English Ph.D. (Welty, Faulkner) and years ago I told her I was going to read Ulysses. She said, it is a wonderful, amazing book but you need to read it with guidance. I’ve never forgotten that. And when I read the review of this book I instantly thought back to my mother’s advice. So I downloaded and read this book. Yes, it is about Joyce and Ulysses but it is so much more. It is an intellectual history of a hinge point in our culture. As a backstory on the book and the time, I cannot imagine it having been done better. I am frankly in awe of the author, not only the brilliance but the effort. Remarkable. I am now eager to step into Joyce’s world.
